It is how they interpret Christianity. It is part of their faith to reject other faiths. Like I don't get upset when I can't get communion at a Catholic church. Or I can't sit with men at some synagogues. Why can't their faith be respected but they MUST respect others?
I don't agree with them but a lot of religions don't dig the interfaith thing.
I don't mind them not doing the interfaith thing as much as I mind that they signed up for it, and then reneged at the last minute. They had all the information several months ago, and only this week did they back out of the agreement. At this point, they should have sucked it up and decided not to do it next year if it was that big of an issue - or they should have read their contract better to begin with.
Of course, I find it very ironic that the Jewish congregation is welcoming Muslims into their place of worship, while the Christian congregation cancelled the whole shindig rather than worship alongside them.
Yes backing out of it was bad manners. I hate rudeness. I hate that MORE than them rejecting the Muslims. What the heck did they think interfaith MEANT?
Oh, not that I think it is OK to reject Muslims, merely that I can comprehend that some people have very narrow paths to their divine. So I try not to HATE based on that, you know?
They thought interfaith meant "interdenominational," probably - as in, this one day, the Catholics can be considered to be Christian so they can worship with us. They didn't read the fine print, and now they're shown up as bigots.
I'm on the fence about "narrow paths to the divine." I try not to hate anyone, but I'm quite willing to scorn them for their rudeness and lack of tolerance. It's a situational thing for me, rather than an overall hatred.
Mind you, they're Southern Baptists. I have a deep distrust of current Southern Baptist theology and practice. Hate? No. I recognize that individually, most of them are very nice people trying to live in the best way they can, and I respect that. I just can't find much respect for the way they've chosen.
Although individuals from all faiths are welcome to worship with us at Hyde Park Baptist Church, the church cannot provide space for the practice of these non-Christian religions on church property
So evidently they consider only Christianity to be a faith. Ugh.
No - people of all faiths are welcome, but the only faith they're practising there is Christianity. They consider the others to be sadly misled at best.
