I liked another analogy for GWB's current position:

"A guy wants to go driving on a winter's night, on icy roads. His friends tell him, 'Yeah, go for it' when everybody else is saying, 'Don't go, it's not safe.' And he goes driving, and he crashes the car. At that point, there are no really good solutions. It's a little late for better ideas; the only good idea was not going in the first place."
