A breakdown of some of the programs to be cut compared to the tax cuts to be extended.

The overall message: if the U.S. were to return to the pre-Bush status quo (still one of the lower tax burdens in the developed world) it would be able to afford most if not all of the programs for the poor that are on the chopping block because of lack of funds.

But...but...the rich are over-taxed! Trickle Down Economics! Reagan! Clinton lied!

Yeeeeeeah...

I remember once when the economy started slowing down right after Bush started making tax cuts and what not during his first term, my father and his other conservative friends were blaming everything on Clinton and said that Clinton didn't help the economy. He was benefiting from Reagan's and Bush Sr.'s policies! And all the problems we've had since? Clinton's fault (well, now Obama's too).

The one hope for my country that I have is that so many citizens will be hurt so bad by this agenda that they never vote Republican again. With any luck us neo New Dealers will have clear ground upon which to rebuild. Failing that, I'll organize a California secession movement.

But, but those were the best years of my life... Punk Rock, drugs and enough calamity to generate tall tales for two lifetimes. Yeah, let's animate Reagan's corpse and run up in the Republican Primary. It'd be the 80s all over again. On second thought...

I think [livejournal.com profile] r_caton meant Bush 43 by "the chimp." That's who sprang to my mind.

Screw a CA secession movement; too many conservatives inland. Move out here to New England and help me organize a New England secession movement.

Yeah, but poor people are poor because they made bad choices! They totally could have stayed in school, gotten a good job (because those are just THERE for the taking), worked hard and been successful. So they don't deserve any programs.

And rich people made all the money themselves! They did make good choices! They never inherited the money or got a position due to nepotism. And punishing them for being successful is just wrong!

Also, we need to outlaw abortion and gay marriage.

And heaven forbid you point out that, even though the government takes more the more you make, you're still benefitting from every extra dollar you earn - just not getting the full dollar out of it. So working harder and/or earning more (the second doesn't necessarily follow from the first) will still be a net gain even if you pay more taxes on it.

Pish-posh. We don't need to outlaw abortion; we just need to make you justify it to an IRS audit team (http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/03/gop-bill-would-force-irs-to-conduct-abortion-audits/72680/).

Yes, but the number of millionaires in the US only jumped by 8% last year! (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/US-millionaires-population-cnnm-649773567.html?x=0) That is a travesty.
