I give you . . . the the net Omas.

That is fabulous.

For those whose German is even poorer than mine, it looks to me like you hire one of them to knit for you. ([livejournal.com profile] melstra, did I get that right? My German is rustier than a '57 Chevvy left in a field since 1982.)

They're actually really popular amongst knitters - they usually go by the title, "fingerless gloves."

Given that the yarn alone is worth nearly $20 retail, I wouldn't call $45 unreasonable for a pair of socks. In fact, the standard method of pricing a handmade item is three times the cost of materials, so I think it's about right if they're getting their yarn for around $15 per pair.

That may well be, and I do realize that people's time is worth a lot, but we poor folks can't afford such things, I'm afraid. I'm lucky if I cough up $1 a pair for socks. ;-) Of course, I may also be blinded because a) my mother knits bunches but never uses expensive yarn, and b) I hate hate hate homemade socks (esp wool ones). For me, the luxury of something handknit is reserved entirely for something that a friend or family member decides to make out of their love for me, and I doubt I would EVER pay someone to do it (unless perhaps I won the lottery). That's just me personally though. :)
