Hello!

This is [livejournal.com profile] pyat writing. We're having computer troubles at home, and have no net connection at the moment. Basically, Windows XP went blooey, so I installed Linux (Ubuntu 7.10?) and that works fine - except it refuses to acknowledge the presence of our wireless card.

Our computer did not come with a copy of the Windows XP CD - all I have is a.... um... "copy"... that someone gave me a few years back, one which will no longer install properly.

Given that tonight is Halloween, and tomorrow night I'm at a company banquet until after midnight, we may be netless for a couple of days.

That's the big advantage of Linux -- it takes over when Windows balks.

A wireless card? Are you taking your computer to coffee shops to use the net?

I've had ethernet-on-the-motherboard that refused to be recognised before.. The cure was simply to plug in another kind of ethernet card in one of the available slots.

No, we just use wireless to connect the computer to the net, as it would have cost $100 to get the cable company to move the existing Internet connection downstairs.

I could buy 80 feet of ethernet cable, I suppose...
