I was taking Elizabeth to her music class, and played my MP3 player in the car. One of the songs that came up was by the Arrogant Worms, a Canadian political comedy group from Alberta. The song is called "The War of 1812."

And the White House burned, burned, burned,
And we're the ones that did it,
Burned, burned, burned, as the president ran and cried.
Burned, burned, burned, and things were very historical,
And the Americans cried like a bunch of little babies wah wah wah,
In the war of 1812.

I was singing along with gusto, when I hear a little voice from the back seat.

"They're singing about babies! Aw! That's so cute!"

I nearly had to pull over, I was laughing so hard.

LOL! Great!
I think my favorite song of theirs is "Jesus' Brother Bob". Granted, the only album we have is "Gift Wrapped," but they're still great.

We just have isolated songs. I need to borrow some CDs off [livejournal.com profile] doc_mystery sometime to get the others.

I like the one about "Killer robots from Venus," personally. And "The War of 1812" is very singable. I usually stop singing and start laughing at the line, "They ran so fast, they forgot to take their culture."

I have like, EVERYTHING, if you tell me what you're missing. Or I can make you a mix of my favourites.

I don't know if I can pick at ultimate favourite, but I do love "Boy Band" and "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate."

My husband ([livejournal.com profile] inventionsleeps) would say his favourite is "History is made by Stupid People."

I actually took "Saskatchewan Pirate" and put it into a lesson plan - that I haven't taught yet - about pulling facts from various sources, because it's got so many great details about life on the Prairies. And because I knew I'd giggle my way through the whole lesson.

I'll ask [livejournal.com profile] doc_mystery first, though, because he lives nearby and comes to our gaming nights fairly often. Or maybe I'll just take my MP3 player up to his office sometime when I'm over there and steal all his music.

It's okay...we take plenty of cheap shots at Canadians. :)

The best part about it is that it's not particularly cheap, because it did actually happen. When I was teaching the War of 1812 to my grade sevens, I spent a lot of time on that event. "Yes, they burnt Newark aka Niagara-on-the-Lake - but then we went and burned the White House."

The last line is, "Bring a pack of matches and we'll burn the White House twice!" I have to wonder if that group is allowed across the border nowadays. :)

LOL...yeah, we just make fun of mounties and beer drinking. And saying "eh."

In fact, lately Kate's enthusiastic burps have reminded me of that line from Strange Brew (I don't know what Canadians think of that movie, but it's a classic down here :) where Rick Morranis says "I've been getting whiplash from my burps, eh."

So we'll just keep laughing about stereotypical drunk Canadians, and you can have your laughs about actual historical events. Fair enough, eh? :)

Werks fer me, eh? At least a few of us actually talk like that. :)

I joke that Claire, as a Canadian monkey baby, is actually my lightning bolt: "eh? Claire?" But then, my unilingual Canadian friends sometimes need that one explained. :)

Actually, I remember hearing a story about a concert they played in the U.S. they were a little concerned about playing the War of 1812 for the first time in the U.S., but apparently they got a standing ovation at the end.

Hmm. Was it during the Monica Lewinsky fracas, or right after Bush Jr. invaded Iraq? :)

I think it was closer to the latter than the former. Though I can't be sure, it was a story one of the Worms told during an interview on Mix 99.9 a couple of years ago.

But then most Americans seem to love the idea of destroying the White House. I have a theory that the trailer showing the White House exploding is the primary reason for Independence Day's success at the box office.

Hello! I've been looking into cloth diapering and making my own baby food and Neebs recommended you as someone in the know. I'd love to ask you some questions, if you don't mind.

Thank you so much!

Ailish is almost 9 weeks old. I also have a son, Owen, who will be 4 in September. He's been diagnosed as Autistic but I think that a more appropriate diagnosis would either be Asperger's or PDD-NOS. Owen is not potty trained yet and it doesn't look like it will happen for a while so I'm also looking into cloth diapering for him.

Well, the most versatile type of diapers are the prefolds. They're a rectangle of cloth, usually cotton, with extra layers sewn down the middle for extra absorbency where it counts. You can get pins or snappis (little clawlike things similar to the metal dealies you use to hold a tensor bandage in place, except that they're plastic and have three grips, one for the hip, one for the front, and one for closer to the leg) or you can just use a tight waterproof cover over top of them that will hold them in place. For the newborn, a few good covers should be enough; for Owen, the harder it is for him to take it off himself, the better, so I'd get some snappis.

The next level up from that is contoureds, which are exactly like prefolds except shaped a bit to fit properly inside a cover without folding. In your position, these are the kind I'd look for. They're just slightly more expensive, but the few extra dollars are worth it.

Both of those require at least two steps, maybe three - the prefold/contoured itself, the cover, and some kind of disposable liner or fleece liner for Owen's diapers. (That's not a problem for Ailish until she starts solids - breastfed baby poop goes right in the washing machine.) Poop doesn't stick to fleece and pee goes right through it, so fleece is the way to go for those determined to do cloth. OTOH, it's nice to be able to pick the liner up by the corners and dump the whole thing in the toilet.

If you want to go with fewer steps while the child is being changed, there are two options: All In Ones, shortened to AIOs in ads, and pocket diapers. Pocket diapers require stuffing and they're much, much more expensive, but they're lined with fleece and you can stuff them with outgrown prefolds or contoureds, so they're fairly practical.

Secondhand is the way to go for diapers, especially if you're on a budget (and honestly, who isn't?) There's eBay, or www.diaperswappers.com, and there are a few sites that will let you trade used pocket diapers (usually Fuzzi Buns - those are industry standard and megabucks) for used FB's the next size up. Those sites generally require that you buy your original stash from them, of course.

That's a start.

If you're handy with a sewing machine, buy a couple to see what they're about, buy the covers, and then make your own prefolds or contoureds out of recycled t-shirts. Check out [livejournal.com profile] tightwad_tips and go back in the memories for a while - I know she did a lot of this for her children.
