Date: 2007-06-10 06:19 am (UTC)I just joined your Ontario Teachers community.
Just out of curiousity, what school do you teach at? If that's too personal, what area of the city?
I'm from Hamilton and have worked/volunteered all over the city in the P/J grades :)
Nice to meet you!

Date: 2007-06-10 07:31 pm (UTC)I keep my facebook for the types of friends that are likely to look for me by my real name - people from church, even students - but I never, ever agree to chat with a student, and I back up on my own computer every electronic communication I have with students or parents. I don't have very many - the level of technology in Hamilton schools is not yet conducive to that - but the time is coming when it will be the most common way to communicate with parents, and when that happens, i'll have a separate email account just for that. I'm already careful about what I put on Facebook - it doesn't go there unless I don't mind my church community knowing about it, or my students for that matter. I don't tell them about this blog, and I'm careful about what's public even here, just in case. As a man, you have that much more to worry about than I do, because you're far more likely to be accused of misconduct. Make your internet policy clear from the outset - limited communications, no chats, everything saved - and tell them why - it's for your protection from parents or students who might want to get you in trouble. I taught my students the maxim, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" in relation to this situation a few months ago.

Date: 2007-06-10 08:05 pm (UTC)i will be reactivating my facebook when i move away for school but i agree with you, i would NEVER chat with a student, it's just a compromising position that i would not put myself in
im the same as you with being careful as to what i would put on facebook. when i deleted it i think i had my universities attended and my name and that's it. just going to teacher's college and having my classmates add me, i dont want to be judged based on my "political or religious beliefs" so i just kept that off of there, including any personal information altogether
i agree with the separate email account, like when i was a TA in university i contacted students through my mcmaster email, to keep a professional manner to the job and that's what i will do when i start teaching, either use the board email address or a specific one for my job
so, do you actually communicate with students and parents through email? or is it done only over the phone? im just confused about what you mean by make my internet policy clear?
:) its nice to chat about this though, it makes me a little more calm about the situation because everything youre telling me, i have already thought of
funny thing too, i actually went and made all of my LJ entires friends only - all the way back to 2001!!! I wasn't going to because i thought, those were my entries from high school so who cares right? but then i thought i dont want anything to be found on the internet like that about me
so i just dealt with it and changed all of the entries, just makes more sense
