If they're going to require that interests be limited to "likes" then they need to provide some sort of key-word process... otherwise how can people looking for things like rape-survivor support find the communities? Currently, people are doing this by using the "interests" section as key-words.
I'm still wary... it smacked too much of meaningless soothing in some respects. Better would have been the immediate reinstatement of all journals, and then following their own terms of service to suspend the ones that deserve suspending.
I gather that would have left them liable in those journals that actually were doing illegal stuff. I feel that a quick review/reinstatement process is better.
That said, I agree with you about the interests. No matter what it says in the userinfo suggestions, people don't use the interests as "I like" statements - as you said, they use them as key word searches.
