My stepmother has been huge on "getting 10 minutes of sun a day" since she married my dad. Vitamin D is in her mind a miracle cure for lots of things like sleep regulation, mood disorders, immune disorders, and other things like that. She's a scientist, has a degree in nutrition and I believe microbiology (could be biology) and currently works for the USDA so she's always reading articles like this one and such.

I think she's onto something, too. Great article. Thanks for posting. I hadn't heard of Vitamin D having a correlation to cancer before, but it makes sense to me with what my stepmom has told me before. If anything else, I have a link to pass on to her! : )

My mom is also huge into Vitamin D. She supplements. My mom isn't a nutritionist but she is a marathon-running 70-year-old who is very active and interested in nutrition and health.

Oh dear. Me and my milky pale skin might be in some trouble. ;)

(Actually, I take a supplement that has 100% of the RDA for vitamin D, but I'll grant that getting it through sunshine is probably better. I hate sunshine.)

This DOES explain why my smoking, sun-worshipping dad hasn't gotten cancer yet, though.

You do have one advantage: lighter-skinned people absorb more faster than those with darker skin. So 10 minutes per day would do wonders for you, then you can go back inside. *G*
