I've heard of the movement toward "green roofs" and more apartment buildings are going with at the very least roof-top gardens and greenhouses (which is probably a cheaper, though less environmentally positive, alternative). The tendency of single-family houses to have pitched roofs to one degree or another tends to make roof-top gardens and such a bit harder, though. *L*
