Giving Thanks

I do a post like this every year. It's time once again for me to count my blessings.
I am thankful for my children. I am thankful for the safe arrival of my baby, for the loving care shown to her by her sister, for the smiles and giggles and pleas to be picked up, for the way her face lights up when one of HER people enters the room. I am thankful for my smart, caring, sociable older daughter, for her dances and drawings and hugs and joyful spirit. I am thankful for their little hurts that teach lessons, and for the opportunity to soothe those hurts. I live in a constant state of wonder and pride that they've been entrusted to me.
I am thankful for my husband. I am thankful for his gentle care, for his joy in our children, for his love.
I am thankful for our parents, who love and spoil their grandchildren, who feed us and take us places and see that we are well. I am thankful that, for my daughters, the conflict between two of them is ancient history that doesn't affect them, except for bringing a fifth grandparent to love them. I am thankful for their nearness in this age of far-flung families.
I am thankful for our siblings, who spoil their nieces, providing more squares in the quilt of family that keeps them safe and warm. I am grateful for the little one who will be my daughters' first cousin, whose advent in February will finally make me an aunt. I am thankful for the nearness of most of them, and for the opportunities provided by those who are far away to understand that distance separates us exactly as much as we let it.
I am grateful for our friends, those who stimulate and divert us as we restore each others' spirits. I am grateful that my daughter trusts them and that her trust is treated as the sacred thing that it is. I am grateful for the laughter, the games, the food, the company we share.
I am grateful for our home. I am grateful for this physical building, but also for out neighbourhood, our city, our country. I am grateful that my country cares enough about its citizens to support our health care. I am grateful for the time I have with my baby, bought as it is by a social program designed to help babies thrive. I am grateful for my community, that includes an excellent preschool to nurture my daughter. I am grateful for the freedom we enjoy here, and for the opportunity to give back through my work as a teacher.
I am grateful for Livejournal, and for the community I belong to on it - my sounding board, my soapbox, my friends.
Happy Thanksgiving.

It's been great getting to know you this past year.
