In the mail today came a long-overdue sample that I'd signed up for months ago - the Nestle package. My MIL already got one, so I've been using parts of it for months now. It contained a backpack with several good pockets, designed as a diaper bag; an Avent 9-ounce bottle; a can of GoodStart formula; two sample packages of baby cereal; a "baby on board" car window thingy; and a bunch of coupons and literature about when to start solids, etc, etc.

After reading the recommendations for starting solid foods, I realized again that Claire had all of them, except perhaps one - the loss of the extrusion reflex, which pushes solid food out of the mouth instead of down the throat. I wasn't sure about that one. So I figured, what's the harm in trying?

Accordingly, we put Claire's chair on the table and strapped her into it; dug up a bib and tied it on; dug up a velcro-closure bib as she happily waved the other one around; mixed a tablespoon or so of cereal with two tablespoons or so of water; and readied the video camera.

The results will be shown on film tomorrow morning. Bottom line: the extrusion reflex is still there. I think perhaps a bit of the cereal stayed on her tongue and probably eventually made it down her throat, but most of it came out again, accompanied by some rather hilarious expressions of interest and a brief appearance by the green-eyed monster in a turquoise jumper.

The bib is in the diaper pail.
