The American government has voted to do away with the central human right, the one that makes possible the defense of all the others - the right to know why one is being locked up, and to have the public know it, too. This was the issue that was the catalyst for the French Revolution.

I have no say in this whatsoever - not even a vote, since I'm not American. Some of you do. So, a link: a list of the names of those in the government who voted for it. Vote them out of office, one and all. Vote in people who will repeal this law. If you really believe in liberty, do this. The rest of the world is watching to see which Americans can still claim any measure of morality at all.

Well... I called my Senators on it, or one of them (the other backs an opposing bill, so she's obviously not in favor of this) in response to ACLU email a while back. But they're just two Californian senators, so we've all done our bit, but, I feel like this might go through anyway.

What "our bit" really can be at this point.

Seriously, if I went to Canada I'd want to apply for citizenship. I grew up with Scouts and civics classes and the whole bit, so this idea "I belong to a basically worthwhile country" is kind of important to me. And while I love the West Coast - there are far fewer people here who've bought in to this insanity - this sort of thing is really really alienating and upsetting.
