When I was little, I picked the good stuff out of my ice cream and ate it first - cherries, chunks of cookie dough, chocolate chips, bubble gum, all got consumed before the ice cream surrounding them.

When I was a teen, I picked the good stuff out of the ice cream, ate the ice cream quickly, and then savoured the good stuff. I was an enthusiastic proponent of the maxim that the best should be saved for last.

As an adult, I eat each spoonful with relish, whether or not it has any cherries in it. The creamy ice cream, the sweet flavours, and the chocolate morsels get consumed as they come up on my spoon, each enjoyed for what it is.

I still, however, try to save one cherry for last.

I've heard of relish with hamburger, but ice cream?
Stick to chocolate sauce....

Great, and here's me with no ice cream in my house late at night... I'm hankerin' for some rocky road or some black cherry ice cream now!

My favorite ice cream story is that my grampa used to buy me black cherry ice cream because it was pink, but then picked out all the cherries for me because as a little kid I didn't like the texture. Now if that isn't love I don't know what is. I always think of him when I have that flavour, except that when I was around 8 or 9 I decided I liked the cherries and now I eat them too.

I like your analogy. So very true. And nummy!

I thought of it while watching my three-year-old eat the cherries first. That's the first time she's done that.

My favourite ice cream memory is from the year we lived in St. Catharines. My dad would take us out to Avondale Dairy on Lakeshore Rd., halfway to Niagara on the Lake, and we'd eat our cones under the shade of two huge willow trees that screened us from the rest of the world.

It was Stoney Creek Dairy brand burgundy cherry ice cream that inspired the post. :)
