Modern bananas are basically a genetically-modified crop, totally dependent on humans for their continued existence because they have no seeds. Wild bananas are nearly inedible to humans. They didn't do their research very well.
I'm also very concerned about the people who actually enjoy eating Durian. With most foods I don't like, I just chalk it up to individual preferences, but that stuff makes me nauseous at 20 feet!
I think the point that should be taken from this is, how many other religious beliefs are misinterpretations of evolution or some other scientifically explained phenomenon?
And to turn things around, how many loosely explained scientific theories (of which there are many) are misinturpretations for what could in turn only have a spiritual answer?
Perhaps this is the problem with using the same tool to solve all problems. Science can say to religion: ahah, that's evolution, not God making you a snack food! But then (non-orthodox) religion could say back to the science: perhaps evolution was pre-designed (by God, the Creator, etc) to work so well so that we could survive, after all, all fruit might have been more Durian-like instead!
Is it not just a different way of looking at the same thing?
It is, and that's almost exactly my view of evolution: God designed it, set it in motion, and let it go mostly on its own after that. There are some very deep philosophical conflicts there, but the parts of the theory that can be mostly substantiated don't come under them. I'm fine with a scientific view of evolution, provided the scientist is prepared to admit that before a certain point, all we have is conjecture - and that's where God could be.
Religion and science are both trying to accomplish the same ends - explaining the universe and our place in it. It saddens me that they end up at such loggerheads trying to do it.
There was a Jesuit Monk Astronomer (kind of an oxymoron you'd think, but true) on Quirks and Quarks last week that discussed this idea. Turns out the Vatican is funding his research.
I'm a little scared. That's two examples of common sense out of the Vatican in as many weeks. Has there been a sudden onset of chilly weather in Hell lately?
Exactly my view as well...one of my favorite bumper stickers is "The Big Bang Theory: God said BANG--and it happened." Personally my hubby and I want to put both a Darwin fish AND a Jesus fish on our car at some point.
I'm a recent friend of deliciouspear and I've known hillarygayle for several years now. I saw a comment you posted on deliciouspear's journal recently and I just knew I needed to friend you since I appreciated what you said so much. Just wanted to give you the heads up that I'm adding you to my friend's list.
Hello! Which comment was it, just out of curiosity? And, do you want on the baby filter? It's about to take over my life - I'm 38 weeks pregnant - so the number of non-baby-related posts is likely to drop dramatically within the next few weeks.
oooh add me to the baby filter! I'm about one develomental step behind you - the wedding is about to take over my life - but it'll help preapre me for the next step.
