I wrote them an email to thank them for making defending my faith just a tad easier.

Whooooo!

*cheers*

More moderates like this need to stand up and be heard. Need to blanket the airwaves and buy advertising space. Need to show us that there are actually reasonable Christians out there, not just the rabid extremists that are so frequently all that we see.

They did seem very reasonable, and I think it's good to see those photos of crazy people, so we don't forget -- the crazies are not the norm, and we shouldn't allow them to be.

My comments to them included examples of my moderate viewpoint - abortion is wrong but may be the lesser of two evils, and I'm not in a position to make that decision, for example; and the fact that God would much prefer that I help that pregnant girl find or make a home for her child, rather than calling her evil or picketing the place where she's getting help. Their email in reply said they've considered creating an anti-protest rally for moderates, which I would wholeheartedly support, and I know a lot of other people who would. Anyone who puts the doctrine of loving one's neighbour above the idea that the wages of sin is death would support such a rally.

Ooh, an anti-protest rally -- what an interesting idea! It's the kind of thing I think all moderates could get behind, and not just a particular religion, you know?

Absolutely, everyone could get behind it. The only problem I could see with that is that some of the message - that not all Christians are bigots, for example - would get lost if there were a lot of non-Christian moderate groups represented. It would become an anti-protest rally rather than a "take back our faith" rally, which I think is part of the point.

Hm. You have a point, although the 'social mover' part of me doesn't want to turn anyone away from a worthy cause. Perhaps letting people march (or stand) in appropriate clumps would help? All those with signage regarding political moderation stand here, and all those who more favor religious moderation and taking back their faith stand there? That way, if folks wanted to they could also supportively migrate back and forth with different signs. What do you think?

That works for me.

Of course, I'm in Canada, where the religious right is considerably less powerful than it is in the States. I love the idea of the rally, but it's not likely we'd need one here.

Oh, feel free to grab all the religious right you want from us -- we're happy to share! ;)

Um, no thanks. . . a small, slightly aggrieved one is fine with us. They can make all kinds of noise, but they don't have the political clout to actually do anything so everyone ignores them. In return, they get to feel like martyrs and complain about how the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Everybody wins!

Thanks for the link! (= I'm a freethinker, but I think that website was a really good idea and... I'd just emailed 2 of my Muslim friends to ask if there's a similar site for Muslims!
