The teacher-appropriate costume is in its Value Village downstairs. It consists of last year's cowled robe, with the hood tucked in; a feather boa in purple and black; a black-and-purple witch's hat; and a purple sparkly broomstick. No makeup - my most important consideration is that when Elizabeth comes to visit, she's not afraid of me. So I'm a purple sparkly fun witch.

Piet carved a Pooh pumpkin, and did a good job of it. Elizabeth enjoyed the process. After I had done most of the cleaning out of the gourd, she told daddy, "I see the graines! You take out the graines and the cheveux, daddy?" I had to explain to daddy that graines meant seeds, and the fibres in the pumpkin looked like hair. :)

This is the first year of my teaching career when no kids have asked where I lived just before Devil's Night. The kids who have plagued this neighbourhood on other Devil's Nights have not been seen in recent months, so our house will probably be fine. The worst that would likely happen would be a few eggs on the car, anyway.

Walnut is no longer Baby C, because, though a girl baby will still be Claire, a boy baby will not be Christian. We're still leaning towards Arthur for a name, though this choice made my sister start madly investigating baby name sites in an attempt to change my mind. We'll see what she comes up with. I've liked many of the suggestions, but many of them also have connotations or connections that make them problematic. We'll see what else we come up with.

It's after nine, and it feels like it's after ten, so it's time for this mommy to head for bed. G'night all, and Happy Halloween!

Better than the city of Detroit, where Devil's Night very recently used to be synonymous with widespread arson. (Now, it's been renamed Angels' Night, and 50,000 volunteers keep watch to reduce the arson to nearly nil.)

Wow. That is a fine example of a community coming together to solve a problem. My hat goes off to the people of Detroit for that.

When I coined that nickname, the baby was about the size of a large walnut. It's stuck, even though the baby's somewhat bigger than that now.

Piet's French isn't quite as good as Elizabeth's. :)

haha. Walnut. Then what was Elizabeth called previously?

It just struck me as somewhat funny because the name Piet sounded kinda french (or was I wrong there?)

She wasn't, really. She was just the baby, and we found out she was a girl pretty early, so after that she was Elizabeth.

Piet's name is Dutch, actually.
