I found out at lunch today what my new placement is for next year. I'm at a nice little school in the East End, a five-minute drive from home and a ten-minute bus ride if the traffic's bad. It's a k-5 school, and I'm doing the grade 5 core subjects, and my own French. I'm guessing the three junior teachers (one 4, one 4-5 split, and myself) each take one subject on rotary, and I'm hoping to give up science in favour of Social Studies, which I know a lot more about. It's an open concept school, so there are three classes in one large space; the kids can't see each other, but they can hear each other. For that reason, one of the portables will be the French room, to eliminate the noise factor for the other classes.
This is nearly as good as I could have gotten. The school is great; the location is great; the job is pretty good. At least four teachers took one look at my face and said, "You look happy! What happened?"
I'm going to pick the brains and raid the bookshelves of one of our grade 5 teachers (or at least, write down the titles of the resources she recommends.) The elections unit I can do, because I signed my kids up for Student Vote 2004 and then reneged in the face of overwhelming student apathy. I've even got flyers for the three major parties; I need to talk to some people about Green Party flyers for my class for next year. And I need to spend some time with our French teacher, asking which topics she taught with grade 5's this year.
All of a sudden I've got a lot more energy for my job. It's nice that something has gone right for a change, professionally.
