The second round of postings ended at 4:00 this afternoon. Interviews must happen sometime between 8:00 Monday morning and 5:00 next Friday afternoon. By 5:30, I had two interviews scheduled, one for the job I really, really want (grades 4-6 Core French at a nice school in Ancaster) and the other for a job that would be quite nice, though it's only half time - grade 4 French Immersion. That one isn't as good mostly because it means a half-day at a different school, not necessarily of my choosing. I'm still going all out for it, though - half a day doing something I'm suited for is better than a full day doing something I'm not, which I might end up with if I wait to be placed.

I'm happy that I got called so fast - with the last round of postings, I didn't even get called for the two jobs I really wanted. It's a good sign. It also means I'm going near the beginning, which is usually a good spot to be.

On the one hand, it's great that I have a job, no matter what, and would need to be pretty awful for a very long time before they could get rid of me. (Since I would never let myself be that bad, I've got a job with this board as long as I want one.) On the other hand, this posting process is ludicrously long and so late in the year that if the placement I get turns out to be the fire to the current frying pan, there's not really enough time to get hired at a different board by September.

I hate job-hunting.

Wish me luck!

Best of luck! It'd be great to get the job you really want, and even better for the school board to get teachers who like what they do! :)

Ian was in French immersion up until the 6th or 7th grade, at which point he got a teacher who was so horrible even his mom approved of him switching schools, out of immersion. They had moved into Hamilton just so he could be in French immersion, so you can imagine how bad this woman was.

Having been the really bad teacher that people tried to get away from in my first year(though I have substatially improved since then), I can sympathise both with Ian and with his teacher. Everyone has stories like that about bad teachers, which is why Mike Harris' recertification plan for teachers resonated so much with the public. Personally, I believe that there are very, very few bad teachers. Most of those people remember as bad were people who would do very well in some other grade or school. The problem was less with the teacher than with the assignment. After all, though I teach the curriculum fairly well, I know my kids this year will look back on me as the worst of the three teachers they had this year. The grade 4's last year feel exactly the opposite; I've had several ask me why I couldn't be their French teacher again because they had fun in my class. After which statement, they usually launch into their rendition of one of the plays we did in French, which they still remember word for word, even the parts they didn't play themselves.

One of the reasons I want out of this school is because that reputation, earned while I was green and in way over my head, is too hard to shake.

I can totally understand that. My first experience working with kids in an educational setting was pretty nerve wracking. They didn't respect me, were nearly the same height as me, and were saucy as anything. It was a great learning experience, and I was happy for it to be over!

Ian was thinking maybe his teacher was just nuts. She would make personal insults at the students, and really favour others. I can see your point about being in the wrong postion at the wrong time. Hopefully that's all it was with her.
