It's on my thumb because it came in hanks, and I wound it into a centre-pull ball using my thumb to keep the centre open. I've got six hanks, of which three have been wound into centre-pull balls, for a total of 1340 yards.

Is there a certain way you have to wind it to create a center pull ball?

You hold a thread down your thumb, then wind it in a normal ball with your thumb at the centre, and there are no other tricks to it.

Gorgeous color!!! The sweater will be wonderful! And thanks for the hint on making center-pull balls. I usually just work with skeins and keep them that way since I do so little crocheting, but this is a good tip to know! :)
