One of Kathy Reichs' books touches on that epidemic. The book you're reading was one of the ones she cited, in fact. *S* Death Du Jour is a great book in the series. The main character, a forensic anthropologist, is commissioned to dig up and verify the bones of a nun who advocated medical modernization and argued for vaccination and improved sanitation practices when she's nominated for beatification. That part of it was fictional, I believe, but Ms. Reichs does tell the story of the epidemic. It's pretty neat.
