Well, [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae won the first game of Seafarers of Catan this evening. I was happy for her, because it was the first game of any version of Settlers that she had ever won. I was rather disappointed in my nine-point showing, however. (The scenario we were playing required thirteen points to win.) So we played again, and this time, I won!

We decided to mix up all the land squares and place them randomly, rather than in the set pattern suggested by the scenario. As a result, the two gold squares both made it to the main continent. Gold squares allow players to get one of whichever resource they want when the number on the gold square comes up. Well, one gold square had a six, which along with an eight is the highest probability on the board. The other gold square had a ten, which is not bad, either.

I played last, which meant I got neither of these squares. Instead, I set up in Mineville, right in the middle of some very good ore-mining areas. I won by trading in the massive amounts of ore and wood I was getting for all the resources that I rarely received. I also managed to beat [livejournal.com profile] etherlad at the longest road race, taking it at the last minute by placing three ships at once to give me fourteen points. It was very nice.

Memorable lines of the evening: "You three sheep! Stand on top of each other. Now, put on this armour. You're now a soldier." (Said by [livejournal.com profile] etherlad, when [livejournal.com profile] pyat traded one sheep with me and another with [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae for the means to buy a development card.)

"If you say "lumber for wool," it doesn't sound so bad." (Also [livejournal.com profile] etherlad. He just had all the good ones.)
