The real difference between then and now is that the girl was generally forced to marry the man who got her pregnant. I'm sure there was more than one case where she figured out she was pregnant, the man in question was gone or otherwise unavailable, so she found a nice farmboy, enticed him, and forced him to do the decent thing and take someone else's bastard as his first-born. Certainly that scenario has come up fairly often in the literature I've read.
