While pregnant with our son, I decided not to buy any clothes smaller than 9 months. There wasn't any point in doing it because I knew that I'd receive for gifts all the clothes I'd need in the smaller sizes. And I was right!
If you're looking for something to use as a nursing cover-up, I found a great one at Crochet Me Magazing (www.crochetme.com) in their April/May 2005 edition. It's called the Privacy Wrap and it looks like it would be something similar to what you're talking about.
