Oh, I started singing to her in the labor & delivery room, if not before! I've always sung to her, and played piano and guitar for her at times. She loves music, but has developed a strong preference for songs, things with lyrics. I used to make up little ditties for her when she was a baby, and now she likes to improvise songs herself, both with me and on her own. Some of the rhymes she comes up with are really creative! We also do quite a bit of singing along with her CDs in the car, on both short and long trips. We especially enjoy the music of Tom Chapin and Trout Fishing In America. Can you recommend other good children's music? I particularly keep on the lookout for selections that are pleasing to parents as well as kids. :)

In the past, I've toyed with the idea of getting her involved in one of the excellent preschool music programs (Music Together is a good one, local to us; my sister took both of her boys to their classes; they loved it and thrived on it), but in the end I decided that with my music therapy background, I could give her those sorts of experiences myself. Now, she and I are planning to attempt piano lessons in the fall -- on a fairly informal, low-key basis. If it doesn't work out, I'll back off and try again in a few months.

Certainly, there are some excellent music programs for young children out there. I don't know what's in your neighbourhood, but I've heard good things about Music Together and about Kindermusik.
