Mar. 31st, 2007 06:36 pmNewt Gingrich calls bilingual education the language of living in a ghetto.
A few bits of information for Mr. Gingrich:
1) Speaking two languages fluently from early childhood has been linked with more neural connections, meaning better access to intelligence, meaning more intelligence.
2) Continuing to speak two languages throughout life has been linked to lower rates of degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's.
3) Kids in bilingual programs routinely and consistently out-perform their unilingual peers on pretty much every kind of standardized test, including those that have been adjusted for socio-economic factors and learning disabilities, including tests in English (starting as early as grade three, depending on the test, though most tests say bilingual kids will catch up by grade five or six at the latest.)
I could go on, but that's enough. I already believed him to be a total nutcase. He just proved it conclusively in my eyes.
Thanks
