We're potty training today. We've done this once before, for a weekend back in June, but then we got lazy and started putting her in diapers, and that was that.

But now we're serious. There are four days before she goes to daycare on Tuesday, and I want her mostly trained by then. I want her completely trained, other than possibly at night, before I go back to work in less than three weeks. So it's back to big-girl "culottes", sparkly happy-face stickers for sitting on the potty, and lots and lots of juice and milk. I don't think I'll overdo it on that, though. She's been peepee on the potty before, so we're just going to go about our business and go to the bathroom every half hour or so.

Wish us luck!

"Make a mommy, Mommy! Make a mommy wit' day-dough!"

So, using purple play dough, I made a round head, square body, and four limbs that Elizabeth declared to be snakes before they were attached. "VoilĂ  une maman," I told her, pleased with myself.

She took a tiny piece of play dough and stuck it onto the mommy's head. "Here's your eyes," she said. Another little bit. "Here's your nose," she continued. It was more or less in the centre of the face. I made encouraging noises about needing a nez pour sentir. One more little bit got attached to my head. Ears? I thought.

"Here's your telephone, Mommy," she declared. Next little bit turned out to be a robot piece.

Yeah. I think I should get Ursula to draw a Mommy as Elizabeth sees it - eyes together and far to the right, a blob of a nose, no mouth, and a telephone and robot piece permanently attached to an earless head, all done in purple.

But this one was interesting. Apparently, I never shut up. But then, we knew that already, didn't we?

We have a young, vibrant, nationally acceptable, bilingual, racial minority woman as our new Governor General, and what's the first question she has to deal with?

For heaven's sake, let it go already. It was ten years ago, and it's ruined enough lives and careers already. Quit letting it divide us and start finding ways to come together.
