Not as bad as it could be, but not as good as I'd like . . .

FOOD 3.1
MOBILITY 0.4
SHELTER 1.1
GOODS/SERVICES 1.5
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 6.1

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 8.8 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 3.4 PLANETS.

I tried a little experiment.

My previous ecological footprint stated that if everyone lived like me, we'd need 3.4 planets. When I answered exactly the same way, but claimed to be from Ethiopia, the answer was 1.4 planets. As far as I could tell, only one question was different: the possible choices for housing sizes were different (i.e. started at smaller numbers). I still answered with the highest number they offered for Ethiopia.

So why two whole planets' difference?

I'm getting skeptical, here. It looks like the test is designed to guilt-trip people in the West into living better. Granted, we should. But I don't like being fed inaccurate information in order to convince me of that. It's dishonest.

I'd love to see some other people try this and see what they get.

I bought the materials today. I can't tell you what they are, because [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae and [livejournal.com profile] etherlad both read this journal. I could filter them out, but tormenting them is much more fun. :)

I've done more than 11 feet of lace for this gift. I finally did the math today, and discovered I'd need a grand total of 228 inches. That's nineteen feet of crocheted lace, folks. WHY do I start projects like this?

Actually, I can answer that. It's because I like tormenting my friends by showing them small parts of their surprise wedding gift. That, and I get several hours of gaming in every week, during which I can crochet nonstop. I've started a trend, too. On Friday, [livejournal.com profile] ruiskafleck brought her knitting with her to our game. After we figured out how she was to add stitches in the middle of a row (I'm proud of myself for remembering enough about knitting to help her figure it out) we both sat and yarned our way through the evening. It was fun to watch her being all assassin, spy-character-like with a pair of knitting needles and some chunky, multicoloured, real wool yarn in her hands. :) That means that out of five women (including myself) with whom I regularly roleplay, three of them now bring yarn/thread crafts with them to games. That's kinda cool.

So I figure I need to do about two feet a week in order to give myself enough time before the wedding to finish the rest of the project. Either that, or I need to get a head start on the part of the project that can be done before the lace is ready.

Don't worry, [livejournal.com profile] sassy_fae. According to [livejournal.com profile] etherlad's countdown, you'll have all the answers in 68 days. At least, all the answers to the question of what you're getting for a wedding present. :)
