It is after midnight. Guests left more than half an hour ago. I have played two very fast games of Settlers (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] rainwolf!). I am nowhere near ready for sleep.

I've rearranged the scenes of the book after they set off from Triskellian. First comes the scene where Annarisse corners the Baron, and he gets fed up with her and tells her what the MacDuncan family does for a living (i.e. slaving, sometimes selling kids from the orphanage she ran in Triskellian.) She, in a fit of righteous anger with him and her crooked superiors in the Church, does some double-dealing with Salvatore, while he plays her like a piano. Something about her hurt during the conversation stirs up his inner demons, so the Captain gets drunk, and we have the confession scene (still my favourite, so far.) The next day is the action scene - Gustafus' island, fight with Corrado pirates, and finding of treasure, followed by a few cannonballs and a difficult piece of navigation to escape the Corrado temporarily. During the calm the next morning, Annarisse sets the penance for the Captain.

I'm debating a few possibilities. First, I'm thinking I need a scene near the beginning from Salvatore's perspective, basically the jealous-of-Ferrante scene, including some speculation as to why the Corrado is setting off. The goal of that scene would be to set the villian properly in readers' minds. Second, I'm considering bringing Rianna in much earlier than I had originally anticipated. The thing is, I need a thief on board, and I'd rather it not be the gunner who gets shot. Problem: if I bring Rianna onto the Spirit of Midchain, which then gets sunk, what motivation does she have for staying with the crew while the Riddock's Dawn is being outfitted and readied for travel? On the other hand, I like having a player character introduced earlier. I may need a whole sub-plot to make it plausible, but that just adds good stuff to the word count.

I'm starting to yawn. It seems the two glasses of strawberry zinfandel, which were making me a bit silly and talkative an hour ago, are starting to make me tired. It's been two and a half years since I had two glasses of wine in an evening like I did tonight, so it's not surprising it was enough to make me a bit tipsy. It's time to try sleep.
