Man, I thought parenthood with a husband around was tough. It's nothing compared to the single variety.

Pyat has been away at Anthrocon since Thursday morning. Our computer has been down since Wednesday morning; I am not enough of a geek to fix it. (I'm using my mother's computer to catch up.) So I have been carless and computerless for four days.

In that time, I've cleaned the kitchen more than I had in the previous month (Pyat usually does that chore.) I've changed all diapers. I called a bunch of friends on Friday night in desperation for some adult, non-parental company and had them all over on Saturday for some Settlers of Catan. This, naturally, involved cleaning my extremely disorganized living room. One couple brought their nine-month-old daughter. I lent her a cute little tambourine of Elizabeth's. My little queen was not amused. She managed to get it back fairly easily. My mom tells me that I should have made Elizabeth share that first toy, rather than let her take it back. In any case, she spent the next twenty minutes ferrying her toys from their place on the floor by the imposter to the couch. She even took the little stuffed dog the imposter baby had brought with her. This, of course, elicited protest both from other baby and both mothers. This in turn led to a minor temper tantrum. All in all, the green-eyed-monster put in a quite lengthy appearance and has not yet been thoroughly vanquished.

I ended up at church this morning, because I was being picked up and saw no way out of it. I saw a girl there who did serious damage to my sister a few years ago but squirmed out of the trouble herself, but since she was in the company of her parents I was polite. At least I got a good Swiss Chalet lunch out of it.

The best part of the last four days came this afternoon. My mom's pool is ready for swimming, so we've been here since 2:30. The baby is starting to get more comfortable in the water - enough to bounce on my legs crying, "Whee! Whee!" (Or, possibly, "Oui! Oui!") The barbeque is being fired up, and even the low-carb diet will let me have barbeque without the bun. It's going to be a nice evening.

Next time my man goes away, I'm inviting a friend over for the whole weekend.
