Well, we had a bunch of people over last night. In order of arrival,
danaeris,
etherlad,
sassy_fae,
nottheterritory,
anidada, and the lovely daughter of the last two, graced us with their presence.
EDIT:
thebitterguy was there too. Sorry, Justin!
For a while the ladies discussed everything from crochet to politics in the living room, while three people knitted/crocheted and the bunny (i.e. daughter of
anidada and
nottheterritory ran around playing. The men, meanwhile, had repaired to the back room with Elizabeth. My daughter has once again been thoroughly corrupted. She decided she likes Strongbad.
After a while, the groups broke up a bit further. Most of the adults played a board game in the dining room while I ended up spending quite a bit of time discussing education and toddlerhood with
anidada. We've discovered that our daughters, who are almost exactly the same age (within two weeks) are eerily alike in skill levels. Their voices are not really that similar except in the way all toddler voices are similar, but the things they were saying were so close, we both kept checking to figure out who was talking. They lisped in the same spots, had trouble with the same consonant clusters, skipped the same articles/pronouns, understood the same cultural references, and asked for things in the same ways. Now, I am somewhat aware of exactly how smart my child is. I know plenty of two-year-olds who are nowhere near her level of speech or reasoning capability. ECE workers, other parents, etc, are regularly amazed at how well she speaks for her age. So it was fascinating to watch an equally smart child of the same age doing all the same things. We decided to chalk it up to a combination of good genes, good health (except for the last three months - poor bunny - still, good health during pregnancy and infancy) good parenting, and luck. We played with them, encouraged them to play with each other, and laughed till we cried at their pronouncements. We discussed early literacy and linguistic development, and how parenting has changed even within our lifetime, and generally patted ourselves on the back and were thankful for modern medicine.
It was good to see that they're all healthy (comparatively) and that life is settling down for them. And it was good to see the bunny being her usual energetic self. She's endured more than many adults have of our health care system already and has come through with flying colours. She's an excellent example of how well our system usually works - with the exception of the first doctors who ignored a toddler who kept saying, "ear hurt!" And that could have happened anywhere.
I enjoyed my cherry-coke-with-a-kick. It's nice that I can get a very slight, comfortable buzz from one finger of a certain type of liquor. I almost never have more than that, and it means one good-sized bottle will last me for months.
And that's all. Good evening all around.
