It's Beach Day at our school.

The kids were instructed to wear beach clothes (but bring things that would be seasonal to wear for recess.) This afternoon we headed down to the gym, where a half-size volleyball court was set up. We each picked two kids from our classes, and while the whole school watched, we played a rule-less game of volleyball, kids against teachers. I think we traumatized a few kindergarten kids. They were sitting near the teachers' side of the court, and the poor aim of the student servers had them being pelted with the ball periodically. By the time we were on the third group of students, they got so they covered their heads whenever they saw the ball coming their way!

One more period to go - Rotating Clubs. If the other teachers have their way, this will be the last week for rotating clubs. They feel they don't get enough time to teach the curriculum when we lose an hour a week. I like the clubs - I teach a card game one week, then let them play cards every other week while I prepare the next week's lessons. It's the closest I get to a prep on a Friday. But if they all ask to get rid of it, I'll go along with it. I could use the time for more social studies, especially since the projects will basically involve independent work for several weeks.

It's been a good day, but I'll be glad when it's over and I'm on VACATION!
