I read this while I was in the nut-hut. I was sort of unimpressed by The Other Boleyn Girl, and wasn't really expecting much. I did find this to be a much better read-- I don't know if it was the mermaid mythology woven in, or the Yorkist rule not being as frequently fictionalized, or just that she's starting to become a better writer (I suspect one of the former two, although I'm a harsh bitch that way) Either way-- I didn't read any of the other books surrounding the Tudors, and though I love historical fiction (to a point-- Michener was a family friend, and I can't pick up one of his books without falling asleep, but I adore Edward Rutherford, even though they write the exact same style of book)
But no, I agree, it came out more intelligently and readable than I expected, because I sort of was, I hate to say, expecting drivel.
