And with so many Americans on my friends list, I wouldn't want them to think I support less rights than I do. The differences are important to the debate - I think in the States, I would be supporting either more rights for common-law couples, or extending the definition of marriage to include them, so as to minimize the effects of the laws. It would become less of an issue then, because all you have to do is define common-law to include homosexual couples and you're set.
That said, full, legal marriage is a goal to work towards. I just don't think the States, in particular, is quite ready for it. Democracy has said no, and while that's disappointing on one level, it's also an affirmation of the system. Circumventing the system is not a good precedent to set, IMO.
