Scared.

The American government has voted to do away with the central human right, the one that makes possible the defense of all the others - the right to know why one is being locked up, and to have the public know it, too. This was the issue that was the catalyst for the French Revolution.

I have no say in this whatsoever - not even a vote, since I'm not American. Some of you do. So, a link: a list of the names of those in the government who voted for it. Vote them out of office, one and all. Vote in people who will repeal this law. If you really believe in liberty, do this. The rest of the world is watching to see which Americans can still claim any measure of morality at all.

I think they just voted on how to word the bill. I'm not sure it's been pased yet. But I am scared. It's foreigners for the moment, but there's been consistent talk about suspending habeas corpus, period. Michelle and I might be heading up you're way soon to crash while we apply for aslyum.

Yay!

Torture for everyone!

Personally, I think the only effective way to demonstrate that this is not acceptable is to waterboard every single member of congress and the senate. Then when they have real applicable knowledge of what they're condoning then ask them whether it's ok to do that to prisoners over and over again.

I'm not joking, it's time they got a taste of what they approve.

Frazer's urge to visit the U.S. (he's wanted to go vacation in Hawaii with me for a while now) just vanished.

Guess somewhere else gets our tourism dollars.

WHAT?!?! *shocked*

I am so, so glad you are on my friends list. I admit I don't pay very much attention to the news, so I'm happy that there's other people who DO pay attention, and I can stay informed about the things I desperately need to know.

This is scary. Very very scary. I'm running off now to a forum where smart people (including at least one lawyer) post, so I can see what they say about this. And I will most definitely be writing to my congressmembers about this.

IF my vote gets counted at all.

Well... I called my Senators on it, or one of them (the other backs an opposing bill, so she's obviously not in favor of this) in response to ACLU email a while back. But they're just two Californian senators, so we've all done our bit, but, I feel like this might go through anyway.

What "our bit" really can be at this point.

Seriously, if I went to Canada I'd want to apply for citizenship. I grew up with Scouts and civics classes and the whole bit, so this idea "I belong to a basically worthwhile country" is kind of important to me. And while I love the West Coast - there are far fewer people here who've bought in to this insanity - this sort of thing is really really alienating and upsetting.

I was still voting in Colorado politics at the last election, and I remember voting against Wayne Allard, and am glad of that now.

Unfortunately, though hardly unexpectedly, both senators from Texas voted for it. For this, if NOTHING else, I think I just may vote for their opponents. I have little doubt that if Van Taylor (the current Republican candidate for our House seat) actually held the office he's campaigning for, he would have. Heh. He's running mud-slinging ads bitching at Chet Edwards for voting to give food stamps to illegal aliens. Of course, Edwards flip-flopped on it, voting for it, against it, and for it again apparently... Hell, if that were the only issue, I'd probably vote for Edwards just for that. I mean, most of the "illegal aliens" are migrant workers harvesting the very food they're unable to afford to buy!
