You'd probably like Wooly Thoughts (I think it's http://www.woolythoughts.com). It's geek knitting, quilting, etc. Also in various places online you'll find a DNA scarf, a charming bag/container based on the mathematics of prime numbers, a 3D knit model of DNA suitable for children and, of course, myriad Fibonacci patterns. ^_^
When I was studying for my PhD, I knitted a mobius strip using a flexible knitting needle. Yes, just one needle along the edge. Casting off was very difficult. Crocheting them is a lot easier.
Crocheting would definitely be easier, and I think it would be easier for this project, too. I usually prefer crochet anyway - the knitting is an attempt to expand my crafting horizons.
