I know a great deal of history from very legitimate sources - a large chunk of my degree is in history. But the details, how people lived, what they wore, all the really fun stuff? I learned most of that from the better-quality romance novels. Oh, Jude Devereaux's older stuff is excellent, too, especially Remembrance. That novel never fails to crack me up.
