Use two double-points and knit i-cord. You can do it at any gauge and it doesn't involve a knitting spool, which to me is even *more* tedious in the long run.

I'm just not a fan of i-cord, but on the rare occasions that a crocheted chain won't cut it, I'd rather knit it than fiddle with a french knitter.
