In Europe, it's all the same thing. I gave up trying to explain the difference most of the time. He saw me as American, and I wasn't interested enough to correct the impression.

I remember having conversations where people would try to guess my nationality. It went something like this:

"Dutch?"
"non."
"Anglaise?"
"Non."
"Americaine?"
"Non. Absolument pas."

The guesses would get more and more outrageous, and when I finally told them the truth, their answer was, "But you can't be Canadian. You don't have a Quebecois accent." *bangs head against wall*
